Our Sea Farm

Harvest day at Bangs Island Mussels

the ocean is our farm

Just like the vendors at your local farmers market, we plant our seeds, harvest our crops, and steward the ecosystem that allows us to do our rewarding work.

We cultivate our unique mussels in the cold, clean waters of Maine. Our farm sites consist of twenty-six rafts, each of which hold specially designed ropes that dangle vertically in the ocean, suspended above the silt and predators of the seafloor. Our mussels attach themselves to these ‘dropper lines’ as juvenile seed and safely grow under the protection of our rafts until they’re ready to harvest.

Vertical Farming

Alongside our mussels, we grow and harvest kelp. This technique of farming multiple species that benefit one another is known as “Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture.”

Our combination of mussels and kelp help keep the surrounding water pristine, turning our farm sites into hotspots of biodiversity and ensuring a healthy ocean ecosystem.

We maintain the highest environmental standards in every aspect of our business. When harvest time comes, we bring our mussels home to Portland, ME using the lowest impact practices possible.

From the start we have been dedicated to reducing the impact of seafood production on the planet - it’s one of the reasons we chose mussels. We are proud to grow our mussels in a non-invasive way that regenerates and restores the marine habitat we depend on. Bangs Island Mussels is part of the solution.
